Valencia On The Road - Hostel in Europe
Valencia, Spain
Valencia bathed by the glorious warm waters of the Mediterranean sea, this
exuberant and modern metropolis is the third largest in Spain.
In spite
of its large population, Valencia not only enjoys of every amenity
existent in any other Spanish city but also enjoys of a more relaxed
life style than its bigger counterparts.
Valencia is located on the East coast of Spain in the region of the same
name.
Valencia is best known for "Las Fallas," a festival that takes place in
March, where massive papier-maché sculptures are raised everywhere in
the city to be burned on "la nit del foc" (night of fire).
One of the main attractions is Saint Mary's Cathedral which is both
architecturally and historically rich along with its tower, locally
known as "El Miquelet" or Little Michael. Climb its 51 meters and you
will have an amazing 360° view of the city.
If this building could talk it would tell innumerable stories of all the
occurrences its walls have seen throughout the centuries. For instance,
after been built in the 14th century, it became a mosque during the
Muslim invasion. Later, when El Cid conquered the city, it became a
Roman Catholic cathedral.
The Muslims reconquered the city again and
used it as a mosque. But after king Jaume I took control over Valencia
things changed again to this day.
This and many more stories abound in this fascinating city.
If you have
some spare time in your next trip to Spain, do not hesitate in paying a
visit to this enchanting gem of the Mediterranean coast.
